Phil Boyer enjoyed a superb first season with the Saints, netting 17
goals in 41 league games. Included in this total were doubles against
Burnley, Notts. County, Bristol Rovers and Blackburn Rovers, all these
games being played at the Dell. He struggled for goals in the top flight
during the 1978/79 season but the following campaign bagged the fine
return of 23 goals from 42 games to finish as Division One leading
scorer. Despite this return Phil was on his way out of the club just
months later following the arrival of Kevin Keegan, Manchester City his
destination for a fee of £220,000. Phil is pictured above during the
match against Everton on 4th October 1980.
