Ritchie took a drop in his pay to join Stoke, as he had been
working in a local shoe factory and playing football part-time.

Ritchie continued to play for Stoke until he broke his leg in September 1974 ending his career. He scored a club record 176 goals in 347 appearances for Stoke - League & Cup games ).
After retiring John ran a pottery business in the Potteries where he had flourished as a player
He died on 23rd. February 2007, aged 65.
He was survived by his wife Shirley, two sons and a daughter.
