The tragedy for Stoke City full back Mike Pejic (he is pictured above playing for the Potteries club a few months before his England call-up) when looking at the definitive moment of his international career was that he probably didn't have to go for the ball anyway. His own goal against Scotland at Hampden in 1974 is still one of the more memorable England own goals - not least for the Scots - as it came from such a colossal attempt to block a shot which he believed to be heading for England's empty net as Peter Shilton tried to scramble back. However, the replays showed that Joe Jordan's left-footer - struck with the outside of his boot and skidding along the soaked Hampden surface - was going a couple of yards wide until Pejic slid across to try to poke it away, and only managed to divert the ball more conclusively into the net. Jordan tried to claim the goal but it was credited to Pejic, and fellow full back David Nish later scored another - less spectacularly - to give Scotland a bizarre 2-0 win. It was Pejic's fourth cap in a row and also his last. (Matthew Rudd) |
