Allan Johnston soon became a favourite with the Sunderland faithful following his £550, 000 move from French side Rennes in March 1997. He enjoyed an excellent first full season in 1997/98, firing 11 goals in 40 league games to help the Black Cats to a third place finish. The following campaign saw Allan chip in with 7 goals in 40 games as Sunderland clinched the First Division title but then followed a contract dispute which meant Allan never again played for the club. He moved on to Rangers in the summer of 2000 on a free transfer after loan spells with Bolton & Birmingham.
