Gosforth-born defender Mick Henderson progressed through the youth ranks at Sunderland to make 95 appearances in four seasons with the club between 1975 and 1979.
The full-back broke through midway through the 1975-76 campaign as the Black Cats won the Division Two title and returned to the top flight.

Mick’s first goal for the club came in his eighth appearance as Bob Stokoe’s side defeated Hull City 3-1 at Roker Park.

Henderson continued to be on the fringes of the Sunderland first team on the Black Cats’ return to the First Division, making 11 appearances.
However, Henderson found opportunities more forthcoming following relegation.

Mick made 35 appearances as Jimmy Adamson’s side finished sixth in the Second Division after a poor run between November and mid-January dented any hopes of mounting a push for a return to the top flight.

Henderson continued to be a regular at the start of the 1978-79 season, though the addition of Steve Whitworth from Leicester City provided added competition for the right-back spot.

After making 30 appearances in his final campaign on Wearside, Mick lost his place to Whitworth and he would join Watford a few months later.

Mick spent three years at Vicarage Road before a brief spell with Cardiff City preceded his move to Sheffield United, where he spent three years before moving to Chesterfield.

After being appointed player-coach and then caretaker manager of the Spireites, Henderson took over Matlock Town in September 1989 before pursuing a career in the police force.
