A £1 million signing from Bury in the summer of 1998, Paul Butler
enjoyed a tremendous first season with the Black Cats. The big defender
played in 44 of the 46 league games as Sunderland clinched the First
Division championship. The remainder of his time on Wearside was not so
memorable and he moved on to Wolves for £1 million in January 2001
following a successful loan spell. Paul is pictured above during the 3-2
win against West Bromwich Albion on 18th October 1998.
