Tom moved to Roker Park from Bristol City in January 1981 for a fee of £180,000
after spending 12 years with The Robins. He struggled to settle in at Sunderland
and it was not until his twelfth appearance that he found the
net, albeit a hat-trick in a vital relegation battle with Birmingham City!
He lost his place midway through the following season and returned to Bristol City
following a loan spell at Carlisle United.
