Gordon DURIE - Tottenham Hotspur - 1991-93

Born in Paisley in 1965, Gordon Durie arrived at White Hart Lane from Chelsea in a £2.2m deal in August 1991. After five prolific seasons at Stamford Bridge, where he averaged almost a goal every other game, Peter Shreeve signed the hard running, barrel chested, Scot to complement the predatory skills of strike partner Gary Lineker. It looked like 'G-Force' might reproduce the successful partnership Durie had forged with former team-mate Kerry Dixon at Chelsea, as 'Jukebox' marked his Tottenham debut with a goal, Lineker grabbing the other two, in a 3-2 win at Southampton on the opening day of the 1991/92 campaign. Another Durie strike at Nottingham Forest further raised hopes, as between them the Scottish international and Lineker netted seven times in the season's first four games. Durie's impressive start only served to increase expectations but, to the disappointment of Spurs fans, he struggled to reproduce his Chelsea goalscoring form throughout the remainder of his two full seasons at White Hart Lane. Whilst Lineker continued to find the back of the net during the 91/92 campaign with unerring consistency, Durie's strikes became more sporadic. Despite some valuable contributions, most notably a league hat-trick against Coventry and important strikes in the European Cup Winners Cup, he finished his first season with a disappointing 12 goals from 46 appearances. The 1992/93 season proved to be even more frustrating. The arrival of Teddy Sheringham and the emergence of a clutch of promising youngsters, most notably Nick Barmby, signalled the end of a regular starting place for Gordon, who registered just 4 goals in 20 appearances. Durie played 12 games in the early part of the 1993/94 season - his only goal, and last for the club, coming in a 5-0 thumping of Oldham Athletic in mid September - but then left White Hart Lane for £1.2 million in November 1993 to join former Tottenham legend Paul Gascoigne at Glasgow Rangers, where he swiftly became a central figure in the Ibrox club's domination of Scottish football throughout the rest of the decade. For a striker of undoubted ability, who played at the World Cup finals of 1990 and '98, Spurs fans may reasonably argue that they never really saw the best of Gordon Durie. (Dan Kleinman)
