Ipswich Town's Jason Dozzell was touted as a future England player
when Ossie Ardiles took the 25-year-old midfielder to Tottenham in the
summer of 1993. It was Dozzell's goalscoring in particular that had
caught the eye at Portman Road, and it didn't take long for the £1.9m
signing to pick up where he'd left off. His first goal came in a 5-0
hammering of Oldham Athletic in September and he followed it up with a
late equaliser against his former team mates at Ipswich the following
weekend. In a struggling side, Dozzell continued popping up with
important goals. A brace at Manchester City in December secured
Tottenham's first league win in 10, and a header three minutes from time
salvaged an FA Cup third round tie at Peterborough United.
Even though his impressive contribution of eight league goals in 32
games helped to keep Spurs in the division, some of the fans struggled
to warm to Jason, whose languid running style made him appear awkward
and lazy. The rangy midfielder was restricted to just seven appearances
in 1994-95 as he battled with injury. He returned to the side for much
of 1995-96, and winning goals against Queens Park Rangers in September
and Southampton in March helped to keep Spurs on track for European
qualification. On the final day, Dozzell's calmly taken goal at
Newcastle United looked set to secure Tottenham's place in Europe.
However, a Newcastle equaliser, coupled with results elsewhere, pushed
Spurs out of contention.
1996-97 was another injury-hit campaign for Jason and he managed only
17 outings. Both his goals came in April, in a 4-2 defeat at Derby
County and a 1-0 win at home to Wimbledon. Unfortunately for Dozzell, he
had to bear the brunt of the crowd's frustration with a tepid final day
Spurs performance against a Coventry City side scrapping for their
lives. As the midfielder's late crossfield ball sailed high into White
Hart Lane's East Stand, the supporters' reaction suggested his days at
the club were numbered. Sure enough, that defeat proved to be Dozzell's
last game for the club. He was allowed to return to Ipswich on a free
transfer in October 1997, after 84 league appearances and 13 goals,
having never quite built on that early promise. (Alex Voskou)
