Green was signed by West Ham from Second Division Carlisle United in June 1976 for a
£100,000 fee. The giant Geordie centre half made his debut for the Hammers in a 4-0
defeat away to Aston Villa on the opening day of the 1976/77 season and made in total
twenty-six appearances in his first season at Upton Park. However, he broke both his
cheek bone and leg in a game against Manchester City at Upton Park in March 1977,
which kept him out of the first team for almost a year.
Green did not return to the Hammers line up until the end of the 1977/78 season, playing
in the remaining thirteen games of the campaign. He scored his only goal in claret and blue,
from a header in the 3-1 win against Chelsea at Upton Park in March 1978. However, at the
end of the season West Ham were relegated to the Second Division and with the emergence
at the club of the outstanding young centre back Alvin Martin, Green was sold to Third Division
Peterborough United for £90,000 in July 1978. He made forty appearances in all competitions
for the Hammers in his two years at Upton Park.
Bill sadly died following a short illness in August 2017, aged 66. (Mark Matthews)
