Tyler had only a short career at Upton Park, playing in total only thirty-four games
for West Ham and scoring one goal in his eighteen-month spell with the club.
The Salisbury born winger was signed as a replacement for Harry Redknapp
in May 1972 from Southern League Hereford United for £25,000, then a record
fee for a non-league club, after impressing against the Hammers in an FA Cup
Fourth Round game three months earlier.
He made a promising start to his career
at West Ham, making his debut in the opening game of the 1972/73 season, in a
0-0 draw against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns and was a regular
member of the team for the first half of that season.
Tyler scored in only his third West Ham appearance, a 5-2 win against Leicester City
at Upton Park in August 1972. However, he lost his place on the right wing at the
end of November 1972 to youngster Johnny Ayris and was only to make six more
first team appearances that season.
Tyler played in nine games at the start of the
1973/74 season, his final game for the Hammers coming in a 2-2 draw with
Sheffield United at Upton Park in November 1973 and he was sold back, to the by
then Third Division Hereford United, the same month. Tyler however returned to
Upton Park a few months later, in the Hereford side that gained a 1-1 draw in a
FA Cup fourth round tie and he also featured in The Bull’s surprise 2-1 win in the
replay at Edgar Street. (Mark Matthews)
