(Andres is pictured above at the 2007 Open at Carnoustie. He enjoyed a
truly memorable week, shooting rounds of 71-70-70-67 to finish in third
place at 6 under par, just 1 shot back on Padraig Harrington and Sergio
Garcia. It could have been all so different for the Argentine though,
as standing on the 17th tee he was at 9 under par and two shots clear.
The tension told though and a double bogey-bogey finish saw Andres slip
back to 6 under par and he was to miss out on the play-off by just 1
stroke, his par putt at the 18th slipping agonisingly by the hole.
Romero's final round must go down as one of the most incredible in Open
history as it contained just 4 pars - all of which came in the first 7
holes! He made an astonishing 10 birdies as well as 2 bogeys and 2 double
bogeys to thrill the galleries in one of the most entertaining final
days at the Open Championship for many a year. Not quite everyone was
totally thrilled though, the editor of this site suffering the anguish
of seeing his pre tournament tip come so agonisingly close to winning the
title at the massive pre tournament price of 175/1 !)
