Even following a 'modest' opening round of 71 ( four more than Mickleson) Justin Rose was always in contention at the
2013 U.S. Open - which of course he won. The first Englishman to do so for forty three years.
His second round left him one off the lead behind Mickelson and Horschel and even after the completion of the third round
he had still not appeared at the top of the leader board. However, on the final day as he maintained his solid game
others were faltering and finally at the 13th hole he gained the lead for the first time as a result of Mickleson's bogey.
He completed the tournament without any double bogeys and scored one over for the Four rounds.
Rose commented "It feels fantastic. I committed myself to the process this week. I committed myself
to putting a strategy in place that I hoped would work in five-to-10 years in delivering major
championships ... it's a moment where you can look back and think childhood dreams have come true."
It was way back in 1970 that an Englishman last won the title - Tony Jacklin. Justin is pictured above at
the British Open in July (where ...wait for it ... he failed to make the cut.)
