The pictures above show Ben Curtis during the final round of his
shock victory at the 2003 Open Championship. It was a truly
remarkable victory for the young American who was, incredibly,
competing in his first major championship. Prior to the tournament
Curtis - who was fittingly born in Kent,Ohio - was as much as
900/1 to lift the title and on the morning of the final round was
still as high as 40/1. He was, however,to upstage some of the
biggest names in golf to take the title with his closing round of
69 leaving him as the only man under par. In doing so he became
the first player since American amateur Francis Oumet in 1913 (he
won the US Open) to win a major championship at the first attempt.
