His retirement from top-class rugby was, he explained in 2002, simply "a career move".

He was keen to join the police; something he did in 1986. "What you don’t want

to do when you’re a policeman is to get injured," he says. "I have played in the British Police team,

touring around Europe. About three or four years after retiring I also played for Scotland
